Tory reiterates his position on city services

Mayor John Tory stands firm on low taxes in the face of massive budget shortfall, declining city services, and mounting pressure from the growing movement to divest from public assets.

“When it comes to tax cuts, we will not pay for them by cutting services. We need the services to pay for the services. We’ve got to continue to invest in our services and services need to be funded with new revenues.”

The Mayor also announced that his administration has approved the city’s first long-term financial plan in 18 months. This strategic plan will be a critical milestone in developing the Mayor’s broader economic and fiscal plan that will help the city’s continued success moving forward.

The Mayor also announced, and the Toronto Star will publish, the full executive summary of his 2019 budget proposal, which is expected to be completed in September. “Toronto’s annual operating budget has remained well under the $10 billion mark for nearly three years, but there are many challenges ahead at City Hall. As the city and region grow, we need to be smarter about our spending on core services and investments that will create long-term value for current and future generations. I am determined to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to help move our city forward,” the Mayor said in a written statement.

Tory reiterated his position on city services.

“We need to invest in our core services in order to address the needs of our residents. Right now we are suffering from a crisis of services. We’ve got to continue to invest in our services and services need to be funded with new revenues.”
