The world of sport is reacting:

The Russian Tennis Federation has reacted to the news that Federer would retire at the end of the season after an incredible 23 Grand Slam wins.

“This is a terrible news for the FIDE world number one. The most remarkable sportsmen never leave us. The most remarkable person in our history of tournaments never left us. He will go down as the greatest tennis player of all time,” said Vasily Korotkov in a statement on the Russian Tennis Federation website on Saturday.

“The FIDE world number one Roger Federer who has won more Grand Slam tournaments than any other person in history is retiring for the final time. Federer’s exceptional achievement is in our opinion the greatest in history. Federer’s career will go down in history,” he continued.

The French Tennis Federation said: “Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are in the same profession, but Federer is the best. I do not understand how he could go. When Federer has reached many finals in a row, he does not give up and he continues to play. Federer is the best. Roger Federer is the best in the world”.

German tennis officials have reacted to the news that Federer would retire at the end of the 2016 season. “Roger Federer is one of the greatest tennis players and a great human being. Even though he is an exceptional athlete and a great competitor, his greatest achievement is with his dedication to his beloved sport,” said Frank Maassen on Saturday.

“Roger is currently at the peak of his game. He is the world number one – that is his crowning glory. The next step for him is to come back from retirement,” he said.
